How to Set Up Your Own AI Assistant in 5 Minutes

No coding. No cloud subscription. Just a personal AI that lives in your WhatsApp.

What if you could have your own personal AI assistant — not ChatGPT in a browser tab, but an actual assistant that lives in your WhatsApp, remembers everything, and messages you proactively?

With OpenClaw, you can set that up in under 5 minutes. Here's exactly how.

What You'll Need

  • A Windows PC (or Linux/Mac — even easier)
  • A WhatsApp account
  • An AI API key (Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google — we'll walk you through it)
  • 5 minutes of your time

Step 1: Install WSL (Windows Only)

If you're on Windows, you need WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux). It sounds scary, but it's one command:

wsl --install

Open PowerShell as Administrator, paste that command, and restart your computer. That's it. You now have Linux running inside Windows.

On Mac or Linux? Skip this step entirely. You're already good to go.

Step 2: Run the OpenClaw Installer

Open your WSL terminal (or regular terminal on Mac/Linux) and run:

curl -fsSL https://get.openclaw.dev | bash

The installer handles everything automatically:

  • ✅ Installs Node.js if needed
  • ✅ Downloads OpenClaw
  • ✅ Sets up the configuration
  • ✅ Launches the setup wizard

The wizard will ask you a few questions: which AI model you want to use, your API key, and your name. Answer them, and you're almost done.

Step 3: Connect WhatsApp

After the wizard finishes, OpenClaw starts and displays a QR code in your terminal. Open WhatsApp on your phone:

  1. Go to Settings → Linked Devices
  2. Tap Link a Device
  3. Scan the QR code

Done. Your AI assistant is now connected to your WhatsApp.

Step 4: Say Hello

Open WhatsApp and send yourself a message (yes, to your own number). Your AI assistant will reply. Try something like:

  • "Hey, what can you do?"
  • "Remember that my favorite pizza place is Luigi's"
  • "What's the weather in Berlin?"
  • "Remind me to call the dentist tomorrow at 9am"

That's it. You now have a personal AI assistant running on your own computer, accessible from your WhatsApp, with permanent memory and zero monthly platform fees.

What Can Your AI Assistant Do?

Out of the box, your AI assistant setup includes:

  • Permanent memory — it remembers everything you tell it, across sessions
  • Web search — ask it anything, it can search the web
  • Proactive messages — configure morning briefings, reminders, and check-ins
  • Multi-channel — add Telegram, Discord, or email alongside WhatsApp
  • Browser automation — it can fill out forms, take screenshots, navigate websites
  • File management — read, write, and organize files on your computer

Troubleshooting

QR code not appearing?

Make sure your terminal window is wide enough. If it still doesn't show, run openclaw gateway restart and try again.

WhatsApp disconnects?

This can happen if your phone loses internet. Just re-scan the QR code. OpenClaw will re-link automatically on restart.
